I want this site to work for everybody who visits it, including people who use a screen reader, navigate by keyboard, zoom the page, or need stronger contrast. This page says what I do toward that, where I know it falls short, and how to tell me when something does not work for you.
The standard I build to
I aim for the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA, the standard most accessibility guidance in the United States points to. That is a target I work toward and check against, not a certification. Nobody has audited this site independently, and I would rather tell you that than put a badge on it.
What the site does
- Pages are plain HTML with real headings, lists and labels, so a screen reader can move through them by structure.
- Everything can be reached and used with a keyboard, and there is a link at the top of each page to skip straight to the content.
- Text and buttons are checked against the AA contrast ratios in both the light and the dark theme.
- Every form field has a visible label.
- If your device asks for reduced motion, the site turns its animation off.
- The text can be zoomed to 200% without content being cut off, and the layout works on a narrow phone screen.
- There is no autoplaying video or audio, and nothing on a timer that moves before you have read it.
Where I know it falls short
The inquiry forms use Cloudflare Turnstile to keep out automated spam. It is made and run by Cloudflare, not by me, so I cannot fully control how it behaves with every assistive technology. Usually it finishes on its own without asking you to do anything. If it ever stops you from sending a message, please call or email instead and I will take it from there.
The sample site designs on this site are pictures. Each one has a written description for screen readers, but a description cannot carry every detail of a design. If you want to know more about one, ask me and I will talk you through it.
Tell me about a problem
If anything on this site is hard to use, or you need something in a different format, I want to know. Call 732-963-5333, or email vir@builtbyvir.com. Tell me which page it was and what happened, and if you use assistive technology, which one. I will reply and work on a fix, and in the meantime I can give you the same information by phone or email.
The sites I build for clients
I build client sites to the same standard and check them the same way before they go live. A site belongs to its owner, though, and so does anything they add to it after launch, so I do not describe any client site as compliant on the owner's behalf.
